What to Do When Windows Update Is Stuck

Updates can take time, particularly on older PCs or large feature updates. Check whether the screen is genuinely frozen before forcing a shutdown.

What to do

  1. Keep the laptop connected to power. Note the update message and how long it has remained unchanged; progress can pause while files are processed.
  2. If Windows is still usable, restart normally from Start and check Settings > Windows Update for status or an error code.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then restart and check again.
  4. If an update repeatedly fails, record its error code and consult Microsoft's support guidance for that exact code and Windows version.

Checks and limitations

  • Avoid powering off while the screen explicitly says not to turn off the computer or shows active installation progress.
  • Back up important files before major feature updates and do not delete system folders to force an update.
