How to Troubleshoot a Slow Windows Computer

A slow computer can be caused by a busy app, low storage, background startup tasks, overheating, or an aging drive. Measure first and avoid random optimizers.

What to do

  1. Restart the PC, install pending updates when convenient, and note whether the slowdown affects one app or the whole computer.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Sort CPU, Memory, and Disk columns to find a resource that stays busy.
  3. Check Settings > System > Storage and free space by removing files you recognize or moving your own large files. Empty temporary folders only after reviewing them.
  4. Review Task Manager's Startup apps tab and disable only apps you understand and do not need at sign-in.

Checks and limitations

  • Do not end unfamiliar system processes or delete unknown folders to speed up a PC.
  • Back up important files before making major changes; persistent disk or heat problems may need hands-on diagnosis.
