Laptop Won't Turn On: Safe Checks to Try First
First distinguish a laptop that has no power from one that is running with a blank display. Stop if you notice liquid, burning smells, swelling, or unusual heat.
What to do
- Disconnect docks, USB devices, and memory cards. Check the power outlet and adapter connection; inspect the cable and adapter for visible damage.
- Connect the correct charger and wait several minutes. Look for charging lights, fan activity, keyboard lights, or other signs of power.
- If lights or sounds indicate startup but the screen is black, raise brightness and try an external display only if you are comfortable doing so.
- If the laptop is unresponsive, use the manufacturer's documented reset procedure for that exact model rather than opening the case.
Checks and limitations
- Do not use a damaged charger or attempt to open a device with a swollen battery.
- Repeated power cycling can complicate diagnosis; note lights, sounds, and recent events before requesting repair.
