Fix No Sound on a Windows Computer

Windows may send sound to a monitor, headset, or disconnected device. Check output selection and per-app volume before reinstalling drivers.

What to do

  1. Use the taskbar sound icon to confirm the PC is not muted and the volume is audible. Open the output-device list and choose the speakers or headset you are using.
  2. Check physical connections and power for speakers or headphones. Unplug and reconnect them, or test another known-working audio device.
  3. Open Volume Mixer and confirm the affected app has volume and is routed to the expected output device.
  4. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. If audio disappeared after a driver change, check Windows Update or the PC maker's official audio driver page.

Checks and limitations

  • Bluetooth audio can remain connected to a different headset or device nearby.
  • Avoid third-party driver tools; record the device model and error before changing drivers.
