Free Up Disk Space in Windows Without Deleting Important Files
Start by checking which categories use storage. Review large personal files before deleting them and keep enough free space for updates and temporary work.
What to do
- Open Settings > System > Storage and wait for Windows to calculate storage categories.
- Review Temporary files and select only categories you understand. Read any note about Downloads before including it.
- Move personal videos, archives, or installers you still need to an external drive or backed-up cloud location instead of deleting them.
- Uninstall an app from Settings > Apps only if you recognize it and no longer need it. Restart and recheck available storage.
Checks and limitations
- Do not manually delete files from Windows, Program Files, or unfamiliar hidden folders.
- Verify backups before removing the only local copy of personal photos, documents, or project files.
