2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi: Which Band Should You Use?
The best band depends on distance, walls, interference, router capability, and the device. Newer routers may also support 6 GHz, which has different trade-offs.
What to do
- Try 5 GHz when the device is near the router and speed matters; it often has more available capacity but may weaken faster through distance and walls.
- Try 2.4 GHz for older devices or farther rooms where range matters, while remembering that this band is commonly crowded by other devices.
- If the router uses one network name for both bands, let the router steer devices first; split names only if you need deliberate control.
- Test from the location where you actually use the device and repeat at different times before deciding the band is the cause.
Checks and limitations
- A Wi-Fi speed test can be limited by the internet plan, server, device, or interference, not just the frequency band.
- Do not change router security or channel settings without recording the original configuration.
