How to Find Your IP Address in Windows

A local IP address identifies your device on its current network. It is different from the public address seen by websites and can change when the network changes.

What to do

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and open the connected network's properties to find IPv4 address.
  2. Or open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Read the IPv4 Address under the adapter that is currently connected.
  3. If the address begins with a private range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, it is a local network address.
  4. Use a trusted network status page only if you need to learn the public address visible to the internet.

Checks and limitations

  • Do not post your public IP, router details, or network configuration publicly unless you understand the privacy implications.
  • A disconnected adapter may show an old or irrelevant address; identify the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
