How to Restart a Wi-Fi Router Safely
A restart can clear a temporary router problem. A factory reset erases settings and is a different, disruptive action.
What to do
- Tell anyone using the connection that internet access will pause, and save active work or calls.
- Use the router's normal power control or disconnect its power cable. Wait about 30 seconds, then reconnect power.
- Wait several minutes for the internet or broadband indicator to stabilize, then reconnect a device and test more than one site.
- If the problem returns, record the lights and timing and check the service provider or router manufacturer's support guidance.
Checks and limitations
- Do not press or hold a recessed Reset button unless you intend to restore factory defaults and know how to set up the router again.
- Avoid frequent power cycling on a shared network or during firmware updates.
