When to Use Windows Network Reset

Network Reset reinstalls network adapters and returns some networking settings to defaults. It is a later troubleshooting step, not the first fix for every connection problem.

What to do

  1. First confirm the issue affects this PC, restart the PC and router if appropriate, and check that Airplane mode is off.
  2. Before resetting, note your Wi-Fi password and any VPN, proxy, static IP, or workplace network settings you may need to restore.
  3. Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset and read the on-screen explanation before confirming.
  4. Restart the PC, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and reinstall or reconfigure any required VPN or custom network software.

Checks and limitations

  • A reset can remove or change virtual adapters and managed work or school settings.
  • Contact your organization's IT administrator before resetting a managed computer.
