How to Manage Startup Apps in Windows

Startup apps can extend sign-in time and use resources in the background. Disable only apps you recognize and can reopen when needed.

What to do

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then choose Startup apps.
  2. Sort or review the Startup impact column and check the publisher and app name before changing a setting.
  3. Select a familiar app you do not need immediately and choose Disable. Restart and verify the apps and devices you rely on still work.
  4. Re-enable the app from the same screen if a feature you need stops working.

Checks and limitations

  • Keep security software, backup tools, touchpad utilities, and device-specific components enabled unless an administrator advises otherwise.
  • Disabling an item from startup does not uninstall the app.
