Why a Website Is Slow: Start With Images and Page Weight

Page speed is affected by the device, connection, server, code, and third-party services. Measure a representative page before optimizing.

What to do

  1. Test the page with a performance tool and note the largest images, scripts, stylesheets, and any slow server response.
  2. Resize images close to their displayed dimensions and export an efficient format that preserves acceptable visual quality.
  3. Remove unused assets and defer nonessential scripts where appropriate; test interactive features after each change.
  4. Repeat the measurement on mobile and compare the same page under similar conditions.

Checks and limitations

  • Image compression is lossy for some formats; keep an original and inspect text, edges, and fine detail after export.
  • Do not defer scripts blindly: navigation, consent controls, and tools may depend on correct loading order.
