AI for Developers: Faster Coding Without Losing Control
AI assistants speed up routine coding work, but they can produce plausible code that is wrong or insecure. Use them as a fast first draft that you read, run and test.
Where it helps most
Useful tasks
- Explaining unfamiliar code or an error message in plain language.
- Writing boilerplate, small functions, unit tests and documentation comments.
- Drafting a regular expression or an SQL query that you then test. See also SQL functions.
- Suggesting a refactor or comparing two approaches.
- Converting between formats, such as JSON to a class definition.
A reliable way to prompt
Give the language and version, the goal, the relevant code, the exact error text and what you already tried. Ask for a short explanation with the answer, so you can check the reasoning. For example:
Language: Node.js 20
Goal: read a CSV file and total the "amount" column.
Problem: I get "Cannot read properties of undefined".
Code: (paste the smallest example that fails)
Please explain the cause and show a fix.Review rules that prevent trouble
Before you keep generated code
- Read every line. If you cannot explain it, do not ship it.
- Run it and write a test for the edge cases: empty input, large input, wrong types.
- Check security: input validation, SQL injection, secrets in code, unsafe dependencies.
- Confirm that any library or function it uses really exists in your version.
- Check licenses and your employer's rules before pasting company code into a tool.
Keep sharpening the basics
Strong fundamentals make AI far more useful. Review HTML, CSS and JavaScript basics, REST API basics and Git basics. Never paste API keys, passwords or private customer data into a prompt.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI write a whole application?
It can draft large parts, but you remain responsible for the design, testing, security and maintenance.
Why does generated code sometimes call functions that do not exist?
Language models predict likely text and can invent names. Check the official documentation for the version you use.
Is it safe to paste company code?
Only if your company policy and the tool's terms allow it. Remove secrets and sensitive data first.
