How to Add Page Numbers in Microsoft Word
Word page numbers are fields, so they update automatically as pages change. The Header and Footer tools control placement and numbering format.
What to do
- Open the Insert tab, choose Page Number, and select a location and style such as top of page or bottom of page.
- Use Page Number > Format Page Numbers to choose a number format or starting value.
- For a cover page without a visible number, enable Different First Page in the Header & Footer tab.
- To number the second page as 1, insert a section break after the cover, unlink the new section's header or footer, then set its page-number start value to 1.
Checks and limitations
- A section break is different from a page break; use the correct break type when numbering sections independently.
- Turn on formatting marks from Home if a page number or section break is difficult to locate.
